Professor Monique Zaahl – Founder and CEO
Prof Monique Zaahl is the founder and CEO of GENEdiagnostics (Pty) Ltd. which was established in 2010. She completed her PhD (SU) in Human Genetics in 2003 and MBA in 2012 (USB). As a Commonwealth Split-site scholar, she completed part of her study at Oxford University.
She has been involved in various research projects for more than 20 years investigating the possible underlying genetic cause of diseases. She has published 26 research articles in international peer-reviewed journals, one book chapter, a review article in the field of human genetics, holds 5 patents and has trained numerous postgraduate students. Prof Zaahl was also the recipient of the 2006 South African National Research Foundation “Women in Science” award, in the category “Best emerging young scientist”, has been awarded the National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF) awards, category: Young Black Researcher, in 2009, was a recipient of the National Order of Mapungubwe in Bronze in 2010, and several others awards. She currently serves on the Boards of Terrasan Pelagic Fisheries and PLWC as a non-Executive director and the Audit and Risk Committee of PLWC
Under the leadership of Prof Zaahl, GENEdiagnostics was awarded the SMME Award for most innovative company (awarded by AfricaGrowth) in 2013, was selected to form part of a Bridge International Bootcamp (sponsored by ABSA, Barclays, CEDAR and Stellenbosch University) in 2014 and has recently (2018) been selected as a Shanduka Blackumbrella company.
Casey first joined the GENEdiagnostics team to gain laboratory experience and an insight into human genetics, and has steadily grown with the company to her new role in the day to day operations. During her time at GENEdiagnostics she has been able to develop her laboratory skills, as well as her business skills under the guidance of Professor Zaahl. In 2017, Casey completed her Bachelor of Science in Life Science through UNISA, with majors in Genetics and Zoology. She has since enrolled in her Honours degree and hopes to continue in gaining a Master’s degree in the field of Genetics.
Aneeqah completed her undergraduate BSc Degree in Biotechnology at the University of the Western Cape in 2015. She then went on to complete an Honours Degree in Biotechnology during 2016, majoring in the field of microbiology and molecular biology. During 2014, she became a member of the Golden Key Honour Society and received the Science Award for Top achievement in her final undergraduate year. She is committed to integrity, professionalism and customer satisfaction. She hopes to further her studies and broaden her scientific knowledge by pursuing an MSc degree in the near future.
Tyler completed her BSc degree in Biotechnology Summa Cum Laude at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) in the year 2016. She furthered her studies by pursuing an honours degree in Biotechnology which she completed Cum Laude in the year 2017, majoring in molecular biology. She aspires to complete her BSc Master’s degree in the future. She has recently joined the GENEdiagnostics team with the desire to broaden her knowledge in genetics and to gain experience in the world of business.
Zenande completed her BSc Biotechnology at the University of the Western Cape in 2017; majoring in Biochemistry, Industrial and Environmental Microbiology and Genetics. She wants to further her studies and obtain an honours degree in Forensic Genetics. She has currently joined GENEdiagnostics to widen and broaden her scientific knowledge. Her long-term goals include obtaining her PhD mainly focusing on Forensic genetics.
